At this time of the year I thought it would be a good time to review
the reasons why Jesus decided to come to earth as man. I decided to retell the story more geared for
children hopefully you will agree and maybe just tell it to your child or
grandchild this Christmas Eve, so they will understand that yes this is the
time that Santa brings them toys and that is great, but the important part of
the holiday is to celebrate the greatest gift that they will ever receive the
birth of our Savior, Jesus.
Many thousands of years ago God decided to
create the universe and all the life including man. The man He created was Adam
and saw that His creation needed a help mate someone to go through life with him
as a companion and that he could share all of his responsibilities with, so God
created Eve. God told Adam and Eve they could eat from any plant except from
the tree of knowledge, He warned them that if they did eat from this tree they
would die. Now Satan who use to be one of God’s angels but fell due to his own
wants, convinced Eve that the tree would make her and Adam like God, so she
took fruit from the tree and ate it then gave some to Adam to eat which he did
even though he knew that God had forbid him to do so. God removed them from paradise
because by their actions they had allowed sin to enter the world and if God hadn’t
and we ate form the tree of life we would have had to live forever in our
fallen form.
Sometime later, God made a
covenant with Abraham saying that his descends would be God’s chosen people and
the Jewish people were born. The Jewish
people became slaves to the Egyptians during the course of time and after God
sent Moses as his emissary to free the people and lead them to Mount Sinai he
gave them the laws one of which stated in order to be forgiven for sin you had
to sacrifice a young lamb unblemished.
Now since the day that man had
sinned God promised a Messiah who would be our savior. He first promised it to
Eve. The promise was repeated throughout the old testament especially through
the profits like Micha, Zechariah, and Isaiah.
Everyone of them repeating God’s promise for a savior.
Now we go to about two thousand years ago, Caesar ordered that all men
under Roman rule this included the Jewish people had to go to the town of their
birth, so they could be counted for a census and taxed. Joseph whose wife Mary
was heavily pregnant and about to have her first child had to go to Bethlehem.
The trip had been hard and when Joseph and Mary arrived they were tired, and
Mary was starting to have labor but, because of all of the people in town for
the census there was no room in any of the inns and the only accommodations
they could find was in a stable. Sometime during the night The
Lord Jesus was born. He was wrapped in a swaddling clothe and laid in a manger for
his bed.
Jesus was no ordinary child he
was born for one purpose to cleanse the world of our sins. He who was sinless
would take on our sins and become the perfect sacrificial lamb. In a short
thirty-two years. The day he went to the cross he took every sin man has ever done
and will ever do with him and because of this we will never have to face the
ultimate death and will live forever with Jesus and the Father. And because we believe we will never have to
fear God’s wraith but will be able to rejoice in his loving grace.
So perhaps you can take a few
minutes to reflect on what the birth of the baby Jesus meant for all of us this
Christmas morning and give a little prayer of thanks before you open the gifts you have
received and remember no matter what you
receive for Christmas even if it is the
most popular greatest video game system
or even if it is a brand new cherry red Corvette with all the bells and
whistles it pales in comparison to the
gift that baby Jesus gave us two thousand years ago and is still giving us
today the gift of salvation and everlasting life in paradise.
May God bless you and your
Family this Christmas, and may you and your family have a safe and blessed
holiday season. Merry Christmas.
PS. This story is not a direct biblical
account but a short synopsis all of the elements in the story is to best of my
knowledge and belief is biblically correct.
